While participating in clinical/field experiences and capstone internships, all students will be supervised by qualified preceptors.
In hospital environments, preceptors are typically licensed professionals such as registered nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners, or paramedics. While EMT students may occasionally shadow ER technicians, Advanced EMT and Paramedic students cannot be precepted by ER technicians, as their scope of practice does not align with the advanced level of training these students are preparing for.
Within EMS agencies and fire departments, students can be supervised by professionals whose scope of practice meets or exceeds the level for which the student is training for:
- EMT students can be precepted by EMTs, Advanced EMTs, or Paramedics
- AEMT students can be precepted by Advanced EMTs or Paramedics
- Paramedic students can be precepted by Paramedics
